            The joys of home I have resigned,

              My heart in stern control—
            
            Alas! I did not think of God,

            6. We have forgiven, but not out of forgiveness (but out of our incapacity to right our wrongs); we have renounced the comforts of home life, but not out of contentment after satisfaction (but as an exile from home in quest of riches); though we have suffered inclemencies of weather, cold and heat so difficult to bear, still it is not religious austerities that we have undergone; with subdued vital forces, night and day have we brooded on money and not on the feet of Śiva; thus we have performed those very acts which the munis (saintly recluses) do perform, but of their good effects we have deprived ourselves.

St. XIII . - The commentary on this is very involved and un

intelligible . It runs this गृहे यदुचितं भोजनादिसुखं तत्क्षमया न क्षान्तं किंतु

रोगादिपरवशेन संतोषादळंबुद्धया व्यक्तमपि न शीतादयः सोढा : तपनोग्नि : दारिद्र्यभावेन

देशान् शास्त्रीयं तु तपः ययादिरूपं तु न तप्तं तत्तन्कर्म तादृशं तादृशं कर्म कृतं

तत्तफलैः तेषां तेषां कर्मणां फलैर्मुनिभिः कर्मोपदेष्टभिः तर्जत् एव निश्चितं वञ्चितं

ध्वीकृतमिस्यर्थ : The first line may be translated as follows : “ We

pardoned [ injuries ] but not through forgiveness ; we abandoned

the pleasures suited to a home , but not through contentedness . " ;

the idea being that the former was the result of inability

to revenge and the latter of inability to get the plea

sures in question , in neither case was there the exercise of

self - abnegation . In the second line ° न वेशा न is a better reading

than ° ना : केशान . नियमितप्राण - Ramarshi says प्राणा : वासा इन्द्रियाणि वा

for the latter of which no authority is given . The former

meaning is quite appropriate . Comp . Vikramorvashf opening

Stanza and Raghuvans'a VIII . , 19. The last line may be thus

rendered " we have performed exactly those various actions

which are performed by the sages , but we have not obtained

their various fruits . " Râmarshi renders : by far : add

ing 757. Rightly ; compare Naishadha I. , 127

and Raghu VII , 8 with Mallinâtha's comment . This Stanza oc

curs also at p . 302 of the Kavyasangraha . - S'árdúlavikrídita .
