Knuth's programming and problem-solving seminars
Looks like Knuth (and sometimes others) used to run a “Programming and Problem-Solving Seminar” at Stanford. Here’s a list (from DEK’s CV), and the reports that are available.
-
CS-TR-77-606 *R34. (with Michael J. Clancy) A programming and problem-solving seminar. Stanford Computer Science Report 606 (Stanford, California, April 1977), 99 pp.
-
CS-TR-79-707 *R36. (with Chris van Wyk) A programming and problem-solving seminar. Stanford Computer Science Report 707 (Stanford, California, January 1979), 83 pp.
-
CS-TR-81-863 *R40. (with Allan A. Miller) A programming and problem-solving seminar. Stanford Computer Science Report 863 (Stanford, California, June 1981), 81 pp.
-
CS-TR-83-989 *R45. (with Joseph S. Weening) A programming and problem-solving seminar. Stanford Computer Science Report 989 (Stanford, California, December 1983), ii+91 pp.
-
CS-TR-83-990 *R46. (with John D. Hobby) A programming and problem-solving seminar. Stanford Computer Science Report 990 (Stanford, California, December 1983), 61 pp.
-
CS-TR-85-1055 *R47. (with Ramsey W. Haddad) A programming and problem-solving seminar. Stanford Computer Science Report 1055 (Stanford, California, June 1985), 103 pp.
- Videos of this are available online! They’re on the

CS-TR-89-1269 *R55. (with Kenneth A. Ross) A programming and problem-solving seminar. Stanford Computer Science Report 1269 (Stanford, California, July 1989), 87 pp.
There are a couple by others:
-
CS-TR-85-1072 October 1985, Ernst W. Mayr, Peter H. Hochschild, Richard J. Anderson.
-
CS-TR-91-1350 February 1991, Jeffrey D. Ullman, Edward Chang, Steven J. Phillips.
Also, a different seminar by DEK:
-
CS1193 *R50. (with Tracy Larrabee and Paul M. Roberts) Mathematical writing. Stanford Computer Science Report 1193 (Stanford, California, January 1988), 117 pp. Reprinted with corrections by the Mathematical Association of America; see also the book’s page.
- Some (not all, I think) videos of this are available too! I’ve made a playlist here — in stanfordonline’s official playlist they are all out of order. Edit: Ah, you can also use this playlist that’s unlisted but used to be linked-to.
